History
Empty Arms is a non-profit organization that provides support and resources to families who have experienced pregnancy loss, including stillbirth, miscarriage, and infant death. The organization was first established in 2007 as a collaboration between Eastern Maine Medical Center and the Empty Arms Bereavement Group of Western Massachusetts. At that time, there was a recognized need for a dedicated support group for families in the Bangor area who had experienced pregnancy loss.
Since its founding, Empty Arms has grown to become a trusted and valuable resource for families in the region. In addition to providing emotional support and bereavement support services, the organization offers practical resources such as peer support groups, remembrance ceremonies, and memorial items.
In 2017, Empty Arms took a significant step forward by becoming a registered 501(c)(3) nonprofit organization. This designation allowed the organization to expand its reach and impact and receive tax-exempt status for donations to support its work. With this new status, Empty Arms was able to increase its programming and support services and engage with a wider network of supporters and advocates.
